Clear vision is integral to your child’s development and ability to learn. Eye exams are a great opportunity to ensure your child’s eyes are healthy and functioning properly. It is also a chance for you to bring up any symptoms you may have noticed (e.g., squinting, complaints of headaches) and discuss them with a trusted doctor.
Beginning eye exams early in your child’s life can underscore the importance of ocular health and wellness from a young age. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends having your child’s vision checked when they are a newborn, between the ages of 6 months and 1 year, during the preschool years and upon entering elementary school.
With a little preparation, you can help make eye exams a positive and productive experience for your child. The team at Aucello EyeCare Center recommends the following:
Schedule the visit at a sensible time. Try to pick a time of day when your child is likely to be alert and in a good mood.
Explain what your child can expect. Explaining what to expect can ease anxiety and fear of the unknown. In clear language your child can understand, explain that the eye doctor will examine their eyes and reassure them that it will not be painful. Then, explain that the doctor will play a fun “game” and ask the child to look at pictures, letters or shapes and name each object.
Practice performing an eye exam on a toy or stuffed animal. You can role play with a toy or stuffed animal to help prepare your child. As you examine the toy or stuffed animal, emphasize that the animal does not feel any pain and that the exam is simple and easy.
Show them photographs of the office and exam room. If the doctor’s website features photos and videos of the office and exam room, give your child a “virtual tour.”
Accompany them into the exam room. Your presence is a calming influence during the exam. Remain in the exam room and reassure your child that you are right there. You can also bring a favorite stuffed animal or toy to the exam to help calm your child.
Remain calm and reassuring. If your child becomes stressed or agitated during the appointment, reassure them in a calm voice. Remind them that the doctor is helping them keep their eyes healthy so they can learn and enjoy their favorite activities.
