The talented team of Connecticut eye doctors at Aucello EyeCare Center is committed to providing you with leading-edge treatments for your vision problems. We understand how important your eyesight is to your overall quality of life, and we strive to offer solutions to give you the clearest vision possible.
If you have myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism, we think you might be interested in an innovative treatment called orthokeratology (Ortho-K) Read on to learn why Ortho-K is very popular and very well tolerated among our patients.
The Benefits of LASIK without the Risks
Our eye doctors often see patients who desire the visual freedom and benefits provided by laser eye surgery, but hesitate at the associated risks and expenses.
In many cases, orthokeratology (or “Ortho-K”) is an exceptional alternative solution.
Our Ortho-K patients wear customized rigid lenses at night that gently mold or reshape the curvature of the cornea to improve the way light is focused on the retina. In the morning, patients remove the lenses and enjoy clear vision all day. If patients stop wearing the lenses, the cornea returns to its original shape, so to maintain the corrective benefits, patients must wear the lenses regularly.
Ortho-K offers the freedom of better vision without corrective eyewear, minus the concerns of laser eye surgery. With Ortho-K, there are no incisions, no anesthesia, no cutting and no post-operative side effects.
Corrects Vision During Sleep
Since Ortho-K corrects vision at night, it does not interfere with daytime activities. If patients want to go swimming, play sports or exercise, they do not have to worry about glasses or contacts getting in the way.
Safe for Children and Teenagers
Unlike LASIK, which is only FDA-approved for individuals over the age of 18, Ortho-K is appropriate for children and younger teenagers. In fact, it is a great option for our younger patients, as the lenses can control the rate and progression of refractive errors. It can help prevent a child’s prescription from getting worse and requiring stronger glasses every year.
Helpful for Individuals that Do Not Tolerate Contacts Well
Ortho-K is very useful for kids, teens and adults who have problems tolerating traditional corrective eyewear — particularly those that struggle with ongoing eye dryness and irritation from prolonged use of conventional contact lenses. Ortho-K also provides peace of mind for kids and parents that worry about breaking or losing a pair of glasses or contacts.
