What You Should Know About Ortho-K
What Is Ortho-K?
Are you or a loved one affected by eye problems such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) or astigmatism? Have you been searching for a safe and effective treatment method that offers the same benefits of LASIK – without the expense and risks? If you answered yes to either of these questions, our orthokeratology services may be just what you’ve been looking for. Orthokeratology, more commonly known as Ortho-K, is appropriate for children, teens and adults alike, and provides a way to slow down yearly prescription increases and gain freedom from corrective lenses.
An Overview of Ortho-K
Ortho-K, a much gentler and less invasive method of reshaping the curvature of the eye than surgical options, is achieved through the use of special rigid corneal molds. Custom-designed for each patient, these molds are similar to contacts, but are worn only at night. Ortho-K molds work slowly but surely as the patient sleeps, gently reshaping the cornea (the front surface of the eye), which changes how light is focused on the retina at the back of the eye. Upon waking, Ortho-K patients simply remove the lenses and enjoy the resulting crisp, clear vision, putting an end to the need for annoying glasses and daytime contact lenses. Ortho-K is a particularly helpful corrective option for those who don’t tolerate contacts well and suffer from ongoing eye dryness and irritation with prolonged use.
