Scleral Contact Lenses
What are Scleral Lenses?
Scleral contact lenses are large diameter lenses that fit over the cornea and the sclera, or the white of the eye. Scleral lenses are used for a variety of “hard-to-fit” eyes, including patients with keratoconus or dry eye syndrome.
If you have been told that you were not a good candidate for contacts or have had trouble finding a pair that comfortably fit and stay in place, scleral contact lenses may be the answer. The talented optometrists at Aucello EyeCare Center, with locations in South Windsor and Newington, CT, can perform a contact lens exam and determine if you are a candidate for scleral lenses.
Scleral Contact Lens Benefits
Scleral lenses are made with rigid lens materials that are gas permeable and highly breathable. Therefore, a lot of oxygen reaches the front surface of the eye keeping your eyes healthy and comfortable. They offer the same advantages that conventional GP (gas permeable) lenses have plus:
- Easier handling
- Superior durability
- Less risk of complications
- Sharper vision
Because scleral lenses cover more of the eye they are more stable, so they are less likely to fall out of your eye. This stability also makes them more comfortable than conventional GP lenses and a great alternative for those with sensitive eyes.
