Aucello EyeCare Center Specialty Eyecare Products
Our eye care products and services also include specialty contacts such as Scleral Contact Lenses. If you would like to enjoy the benefits of contact lenses, but have trouble wearing them or you were told that you were not a good candidate for contacts — scleral contact lenses may be the answer.
The name “Scleral” refers to the white of your eye that surrounds the cornea, which is called in optometry the “sclera.” Unlike contact lenses that fit just over the cornea, scleral lenses have a larger diameter to cover the cornea surface and the sclera (white of the eye).
Scleral contact lenses are used for a variety of hard-to-fit eyes, including patients with Keratoconus (irregular cornea) and Dry Eyes. Your Aucello EyeCare Center eye doctor can determine whether you are a candidate for these lenses and how they can benefit you.
Scleral Contact Lens Benefits
Scleral lenses are made with rigid lens materials that are gas permeable and highly breathable. Therefore, a lot of oxygen reaches the front surface of the eye keeping your eyes healthy and comfortable. They offer the same advantages that conventional GP (gas permeable) lenses have plus:
- Easier handling
- Superior durability
- Less risk of complications
- Sharper vision
Because scleral lenses cover more of the eye they are more stable, so they are less likely to fall out of your eye. This stability also makes them more comfortable than conventional GP lenses and a great alternative for those with sensitive eyes.
See if Scleral Lenses are Right for You
Determining the prescription and fitting scleral contacts takes more time and greater expertise than fitting standard soft or gas permeable contact lenses does. At Aucello EyeCare Center we have the experience and skills to improve your vision with these specialty contact lenses.
