Ortho-K Contact Lenses
What are Ortho-K Lenses?
Ortho-K contact lenses are specially-designed, gas permeable contact lenses that you wear overnight. While you are sleeping, the Ortho-K lenses gently reshape your cornea. The slight change in the curvature of the corneal surface is temporary, but it allows you to see clearly without glasses or contacts the following day and occasionally into the next day as well.
Every patient responds differently to Ortho-K overnight vision correction, so the level of correction and length of improvement will vary. For best results, the lenses should be worn every night. If you would like to see if you are a candidate for Ortho-K lenses, schedule a contact lens exam with the eye care experts at Aucello EyeCare Center in South Windsor and Newington.
What Vision Problems can Ortho-K Correct?
Ortho-K contact lenses temporarily reshape the cornea to reduce refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. So, if you are nearsighted (myopia) or farsighted (hyperopia) or your vision is distorted (astigmatism) you can really appreciate this amazing “Corneal Refractive Therapy.” We fine that most of our patients with mild to moderate myopia are good candidates for Ortho-K.
What are the Risks?
Since the reshaping of the cornea is temporary, there is little risk involved. You can stop using the lenses at any time. You will just have to start wearing your glasses or contacts again when the corneal reshaping effect has subsided.
What is the Procedure?
Determining your exact prescription and fitting Ortho-K contact lenses for overnight vision correction takes more time and expertise than fitting standard gas or permeable soft contacts.
Our eye doctors will measure the curvature of each of your corneas with a special instrument called a corneal topographer. This non-invasive medical imaging technique is a painless procedure that creates a topographical map of your eye’s surface in about a minute. At Aucello EyeCare Center we have the experience and skills to safely improve your vision with these specialty contact lenses.
